General information about all the Centres of African Excellence

    DAAD

The DAAD supports African universities by establishing Centres of Excellence to improve the quality of the education they provide and to increase their research capacities. Thereby, they enable future decision-makers in Africa to be trained in line with international standards.

These world class-hubs do not only provide the best educational quality and research capacity but also connect people from different countries, world regions and academic fields with each other.
The goal for each Centre of Excellence is to develop its own impact on the region and beyond.

    How to apply?
Diverse Centres, huge variety of subjects, multiple systems, different application formats

The African Excellence Network combines many different partners and is characterised by its huge diversity. There are different procedures at each Centre, so check out the respective Centre pages to get in-depth information about the application processes at the Centre you like to get involved with.

The African Excellence programme offers multiple diverse opportunities:

    • Study abroad in another African country
    • Master programmes
    • PhD programmes
    • Scholarships
    • Support with finding a place to stay during your studies
    • Language classes for basic German

Master, PhD, Short Courses and Summer School

Along with the largely interdisciplinary Master’s and PhD programmes, all of the Centres impart supplementary knowledge in the areas of Good Governance, Management and other multidisciplinary skills (conflict management, team building, intercultural competence). Moreover, all of the Centres have a scholarship programme.

In order to achieve the intended programme objectives even more efficiently, the DAAD targets the needs of developing and newly industrialised countries with its funding instruments and evaluates the impact of its funding programmes. To do so, a concept for a result-oriented monitoring system was developed by DAAD and introduced in 2013 for the Centres of African Excellence programme

The programme has been running for over eleven years. An interim evaluation shows that the funding model is on the right track:

How it all started and who is behind African Excellence

The German Academic Exchange Office DAAD

The DAAD is the world’s largest funding organisation for the international exchange of students and researchers.

Founded in 1925, ca. 2.6 million scholars in Germany and abroad have received DAAD funding. DAAD is a registered association and its members are German institutions of higher education and student bodies. Its activities go far beyond simply awarding grants and scholarships. The DAAD supports the internationalisation of German universities, promotes German studies and the German language abroad, assists developing countries in establishing effective universities and advises decision makers on matters of cultural, education and development policy.

The DAAD programme African Excellence, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, has been establishing Centres of international standing in the framework of a partnership between German Institutions of Higher Education and regional universities. The programme aims to train highly qualified future managers and leaders in Africa and seeks to significantly contribute to the quality and relevance of selected disciplines at African universities, create research capacities and establish networks between African universities and research institutes, including German partners. At the same time, an environment conducive to sustainable research is being fostered, offering favourable conditions for international partnerships. The aim is for each Centre to have a transregional impact.
In the long term, the programme aims:

    • to create centres that are internationally competitive on a sustainable basis and thus publicly visible and
    • to contribute to improving the functioning of socially relevant sectors in African countries as a result of activities performed by graduates in their role as decision-makers.
